A Message For Moms From Vela
Every day I hear from moms who are struggling with their kids in some way. Many of us cannot let go of the desire to rescue, fix, or correct these offspring of ours! There is always just one more thing to tweak so our kids can get it right— or more right, in our opinions. Some of us can’t even sleep through the night because we’re filled with fear of the future for our kids. When we step back and focus on our actual responsibilities, our kids then have the freedom to grow up, be adults, and make the life choices for which they, not we, are responsible.
I want to help you have peace even with prodigal or “prodigal-ish” kids. We need a life of our own and to stop trying to live our children’s lives. As a mother of three adult children, I’ve learned first-hand how to stay sane when kids are plotting their own courses. My 36-year journey as a mom has taken me down many paths from craziness and finally back to sanity and peace.
Hula-hoopology 101
“Staying in my hula hoop” means
-accepting God’s limits for who I am, where I end, and where another person starts.
-doing what He has called me to do in my sphere of influence—in my hula hoop.
-not meddling in someone else’s hula hoop.
Focusing on our own hula hoops and letting others focus on theirs is a healthy way to deal with relationships and life.
Embrace the journey
Probably you’re here because your kid is driving you crazy. (Or your friend’s kid is driving her crazy! You just want to help, bless your heart!)
Let’s imagine what peace would look like:
--a good night’s sleep?
--quiet confidence that God is in control even of our crazy kids?
--the skill to respond graciously to “How’s _____ doing?” (fill in the blank with your “quirky” kid’s name)
--fulfillment in our daily life and not wistfully wishing things were different?
I believe those things are possible as we embrace this crazy journey God has given us moms.
